Translocation of the Nrf2 transcription factor to the promyelocytic leukemia (PML) nuclear bodies. The mechanism for cancer prevention by tomato carotenoids involves activation of the antioxidant response element and nuclear translocation of Nrf2. To visualize PML and Nrf2 protein colocalization, we used color-combined images in which the Nrf2 protein is represented by green (middle column), PML protein is represented by red (left column), and areas of colocalization are visualized by orange and yellow (right column). From top to bottom: panels were exposed to control, tBHQ, lycopene, and β-carotene. Treatment with these compounds increased the number of PML bodies in which the Nrf2 protein is present. For details, see Ben–Dor et al. in this issue.
